The Ten Commandments of Deaf Culture”
I Corinthians9:19-22
I. Thou shalt not put hearing culture above the
deaf culture.
For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant
unto all,
II. Thou shalt not lose eye contact when communicating.
... that I might gain the more.
III. Thou shalt communicate in sign language at
all times.
20) And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the
Jews;
IV. Thou shalt not be the deaf person's sign language
teacher.
...to them that are under the law, as under the law
V. Thou shalt not be the deaf person's English
grammar teacher.
..., that I might gain them that are under the law;
VI. Thou shalt not be the deaf person's speech
therapist.
21) To them that are without law, as without law,
VII. Thou shalt not tell non-deaf jokes and puns.
...(being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,)
VIII. Thou shalt not be the deaf person's mother.
... that I might gain them that are without law.
IX. Thou shalt view the deaf as an ethnic group
not as handicapped.
22) To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak:
X. Thou shalt believe deaf can do all things through
Christ.
... I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means
save some.”
